POEM 348: FOR WANT OF SILENCE

a big part of the world now,
is we all want to talk, write, rant,
project our opinion
and force it on everyone

No one wants to listen

in a world where every tongue wag
voices echo back and forth,
we must learn to be better listeners
if we must be heard

in a world where everyone wants to lead
bear the rod of power
and sit on the conscience of the ignorant masses
we must learn to be better followers
if we must bear rule

great listeners can turn into great philosophers
whose words are balm
and ideas change lives

great followers can turn into great leaders
whose footsteps lead not astray
whose legacies ripple beyond generational shores

listen, people

follow, first
