Of all stories, the most told and widely read are love stories but what happens when some rogue boys hate love stories?
Odetokun Elijah Olasunkanmi and Yusuf Balogun Gemini present a joint anthology titled 'I Hate Love Stories'
'I Hate Love Stories' is a chapbook of 20 poems. You wouldn't want to miss this for anything. Grab yourself a copy if you want to know why these two rogue boys 'Hate Love Stories'
Why would a person say they hate love stories? Would it be because of a bad experience in love? This was the first thing that came to my mind as I began to read these poems.
Gemini writes of “Rotten Carrion”, a phrase which smacks of dead things that attract vultures. It leads one to think of having had a really unproductive relationship which produced feelings of wishing for the protective covering of the grave. Much has been spoken of the kind of love that ends up with two distraught people; Shakespeare’s love stories are ones which end often in death; Romeo and Juliet are so much in love that they both committed suicide because of opposition to their relationship.
Hollic writes of longing for love and never finding it. He speaks of the night being silent because there is sadness and wailing. Wanting to say things but never saying them. He speaks of death not occurring with the last breath, but at the point of ceasing to do what makes one human.
When we love, we want to please the other person, but there are times that the efforts are futile, we come to an impasse, and all is lost. Love is like that. Streets lined with the aftermath of physical things by which one seeks love and doesn’t find it.

My impression of these two poets is one of respect for their talent. They have taken a language which was learned, and turned it into a professional written form, and that is an ability which not many have. I will always be in awe of that.
